Aquaculture Marine Research Laboratory

University of Southern Mississippi

Ocean Springs, Mississippi

This new two-story 25,000 square foot facility will include research laboratory space, administrative office suites, small and large conference rooms, as well as educational and support spaces that will enable the development of a world class center for marine science research.  The new bench laboratories and laboratory prep spaces will complement the existing field research facilities and will enable scientists the opportunity to implement the most recent advances in biotechnology, pathology, toxicology, computational science, chemistry, geospatial sciences, and microbiology on the problems associated with marine ecosystems and aquaculture.

The vernacular design includes many elements that are responsive to our region and coastal climate, such as exterior porches and large roof overhangs to facilitate and promote direct interaction between the building occupants and the natural environment.  Sustainable design strategies include the use of clerestory windows for natural day lighting, the extensive use of recycled materials throughout, and pervious parking and walking paths to reduce the amount of storm water runoff from the site.
